EU, UNDP, Unamid to support dialogue in Darfur

On Tuesday, the EU Delegation in Sudan, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN-AU Mission in Darfur (Unamid) will launch a project to strengthen peace efforts and reconciliation through dialogue in Darfur.

The project will support the ongoing Darfur Internal Dialogue and Consultations (DIDC) process, which is considered one of the main pillars of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), the EU Delegation in Sudan announces in a press statement today.

Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, head of the EU Delegation, reiterated the EU's commitment to promoting inclusive and participatory initiatives for building lasting peace in Darfur. “I am confident that the new EU funding will contribute to comprehensive and inclusive peace and stability for the people of Darfur,” he said.

The EU diplomat said that there is a need for a broad internal dialogue and consultations among the people of Darfur to consolidate the achievements of the Doha peace process. “Increased dialogue between tribes and communities will build confidence, strengthen social cohesion and improve stability in the targeted areas of Darfur.”

The project is partially funded by the EU with a contribution of €800,000. Unamid will politically lead and guide the project, while UNDP provides the necessary operational support.
