Villages washed away in South Darfur
Tens of thousands of people have been affected by torrential rains in Sudan over the past few days. Flash floods washed away five villages in Ed El Fursan in South Darfur.
The Sudanese Red Crescent Society reported on Sunday that heavy rainfall and floods that swept many parts of the country last week caused severe damage. More than 60,000 people have been affected.
Mohamed Tahir Iseil, independent MP for South Darfur’s Ed El Fursan constituency told Radio Dabanga that flash floods in Kaya valley have washed away the villages of Nurleih, El Surakh, Deiri, Ed El Jummeiz, and Shano. At least 978 houses collapsed, food stocks were destroyed, and the road connecting Ed El Fursan with the state capital of Nyala has become impassable.
In Dar El Salam locality in North Darfur, heavy rains destroyed a large number of houses and the locality’s main market, a listener reported. Kamal Abu Shouk, North Darfur Minister of Urban Planning announced on Sunday that more than 2,000 houses have been damaged in the state.
On Friday, 165 houses collapsed entirely, and 650 houses were damaged by rains in El Rahad Abu Dakana locality in North Kordofan.
