The inhabitants of Zamzam camp near El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, have categorically rejected a plan for flood victims’ voluntary return, proposed by the Khartoum government.
On Wednesday, Zamzam camp administrators and sheikhs had a formal meeting with a delegation from the National Commission for voluntary return from Khartoum and another from El Fasher.
The displaced demanded security, compensation, expulsion of the new settlers from their lands, the prosecution of perpetrators of war crimes in Darfur, before they will consider voluntary return.
One of the leaders of Zamzam told Radio Dabanga that after the meeting, the government delegation provided forms including options for either voluntary return to the village of origin or being resettled in their place.
Several camp administrators categorically refused, and pointed to” the lack of security and true peace on the ground; this in addition to the existence of four holdout armed movements that have not signed peace in Darfur”.
He said that the camp administrations sent the National Commission delegation a clear message to the Presidency.
