Discontent over scholarship allocations at Sudan’s Red Sea University

The rural population if Sudan’s Red Sea state has expressed dissatisfaction with the new policies of the state government regarding scholarships for students from rural areas at Red Sea University.

On Wednesday activist Mohammed El Amin Mohammed El Tahir told Radio Dabanga from Port Sudan that the state government has assigned the allocation of university scholarships to the Red Sea University administration, instead of the specialist committee which included professionals and native administration.

El Tahir says that “the university has put in place policies and conditions, he described as unacceptable.

He criticised the Red Sea University for “generalising the scholarships to all the cities and rural areas of the state; which means abolition of the policy of positive discrimination in favour of rural people.

El Tahir explained that the university’s scholarship regulations stipulate that a scholarship will fall away in the case of violation of university regulations, or an increase in the household income. He wondered about the procedures that will be followed by the university to determine increase of income.
