Landfill causes river to flood in Sudan’s Red Sea

Torrents destroyed a number of houses and shops in Agig locality in Red Sea state, eastern Sudan, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Great losses of property have been reported.

Twenty-two houses and shops were destroyed in total. Local Member of Parliament Idris Mohammed Ali attributed the floods to the closure of a natural stream that runs from the mountains, because of a landfill that has been set-up between Karor and Tokar.

“People have sought refuge and want the landfill to be removed, in order to save the area,” he told Radio Dabanga.

He expressed his hope that the government and aid organisations speed up the provision of relief and financial compensation to the victims of the torrents.

In related events this week, several MPs reported that people have died of thirst in the Red Sea and Blue Nile states, where the shortage of clean drinking water is acute.
