Striking students detained in Sudan capital

On Wednesday police detained seven students of the University of Khartoum from the front gate of the Faculty of Education, and took them to Wad Nubawi police department for questioning.

A student told Radio Dabanga that said the reason is the faculty’s students have entered into a week-long strike from study in protest against their expulsion from the Faculty of Education, and demand reinstatement and improvement of the university environment and libraries.

He named the detained students as: Haider Ahmed Eisa, Mohammed Saleh Khiyar, Habib Mahmoud Hassan, Mohammed Abdelrahim, Imran Abakar, Bilal Fidiel Hamdi, and Mohammed Nur Mohammed Musa.

In Omdurman, the Darfur Students Association at universities and higher education institutions have demanded the release of Adel Ibrahim Ishag Hajar and Hamid Rihitallah Eisa, students of the University of the Holy Quran who have been detained by the security services since November.

They also demanded the release of the students of the University of Khartoum’s Faculty of Education who were arrested on Wednesday.

In a press conference held at the premises of the National Umma Party in Omdurman, the Darfuri students condemned the Nierteti violence of 1 January .

They also called on the United Nations, the UN Security Council, the African Union and the regional and international organisations to intervene so as to form an independent investigation committee and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The students also demanded a solution to the issue of tuition fees for the students from Darfur, which have become an obstacle for them to continue their study.

Dr Mudawi held incommunicado

The security apparatus has not yet allowed the family of activist, human rights defender and Professor at the University of  Khartoum Dr Mudawi Ibrahim to visit him since he and his driver were detained by agents of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) from in front of the Faculty of Engineering on 7 December.

Mudawi’s relatives told Radio Dabanga that the security apparatus has continued to refuse requests to visit him, which raises the degree of concern for his health and detention conditions. His whereabouts are unknown and lawyers have not been allowed to visit him.
