North Darfur union official accused of selling state sorghum worth SDG11 million

An investigation by North Darfur authorities has confirmed the sale of more than 25,000 sacks of sorghum valued at more than SDG11 million ($390,000*) from the state’s quota of food for workers.

The investigation confirmed the sorghum from the quota, destined to feed state workers, was allegedly being intercepted and sold by a member of the executive office of the State Workers Union.

The head of the investigation committee, Abdelkarim Yousef, said that the accused member of the executive office of the Union acknowledged receipt of the amount mentioned when confronted by a delegation from the head of the Workers Union. The accused allegedly received the sorghum in Sennar state and re-sold it at the place of receipt Sennar state.

Yousef said the defendant has acknowledged the transfer of the money to several bank accounts the he has not yet disclosed. The investigation is on-going.
