Sudan Sovereign Council member: ‘Radio Dabanga is a unique media school’

Member of Sudan’s Sovereign Council and the spokesperson for the government delegation for the ongoing Juba peace talks, Mohamed El Taayshi, says that Radio Dabanga has a fundamental role to play in the implementation of the potential peace agreement.

During a formal meeting with Radio Dabanga editor in chief Kamal El Sadig in his office at the Presidential Palace in Khartoum on Thursday, El Taayshi explained that Radio Dabanga has played a significant role in raising awareness about human rights over the last 11 years.

El Sadig was paying an official visit to Sudan for the first time since the station was established in exile in Amsterdam 11 years ago.

“Radio Dabanga is one of the main pillars that will be relied upon in implementing the potential peace agreement that is expected to be signed with the rebel movements. :This is because of the independence, professionalism, and high credibility of Radio Dabanga,” El Taayshi told El Sadig.

He pointed out that media is an integral part of peacebuilding and reconciliation programmes.

El Taayshi suggested that Radio Dabanga can establish a partnership with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that will be established after the peace agreement is concluded.

“Given the bright record of Radio Dabanga on issues such as transitional justice, peacebuilding, and reconciliation as well as reinforcement of peaceful coexistence, freedom and human rights, Dabanga can play a crucial role in the implementation of the potential peace agreement,” he said.

El Taayshi confirmed his absolute support for Radio Dabanga if the station decides to operate inside Sudan in the future. The Sudanese people have great confidence in Radio Dabanga, which will help the station to play a great role in the peace process, he added.

He described Radio Dabanga as a unique media school because of its interesting programs and the simplification of its message. “The Radio is widely listened to across Sudan. Thus I hope Radio Dabanga will legalise its status in Sudan,” he said.

El Taayshi explained that Radio Dabanga has played a pivotal role in exposing the grave human rights violations committed in Sudan. “For that reason, Radio Dabanga has established a strong partnership with the victims. The Radio gave them the opportunity to raise their voices and express their concerns,” he said.

“I have had the opportunity to be interviewed seven times in Radio Dabanga, the first one when I was a university student,” El Taayshi said.

"Radio Dabanga is one of the institutions that worked hard for the change that occurred in Sudan and paid a high price in this regard," he concluded.
