US Envoy to Sudan denounces deadly North Kordofan attack

The Sudan Doctors Network reported a massacre by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Kordofan on July 14, which claimed the lives of 23 people. The attack was condemned by US Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello.

The incident occurred in the village of Fangouga, about 70 kilometres southeast of the state capital, El Obeid. RSF forces reportedly opened fire on unarmed civilians heading to the market, killing 23 people, and injuring others.

The Sudan Doctors Network condemned the massacre, calling it a “heinous crime against innocent civilians”. They viewed it as “an attempt by the RSF to restrict residents’ freedoms and target them unjustly in areas without any military presence”.

The United States Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, expressed his shock at RSF attack on the North Kordofan village.

In a tweet on his X account, he stressed the urgent need for an end to the violence. “Horrified by reports of 23+ civilians killed in RSF attack in North Kordofan, Sudan. This senseless violence must end. Sudan is facing a dire humanitarian displacement crisis. Both parties must agree to a ceasefire and to stop further atrocities,” Perriello stated.

Fangouga is in an area controlled by the RSF. The paramilitary group is besieging El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, fuelling a dire humanitarian situation as imposed levies cause the prices of goods to soar.

Radio Dabanga reported on June 4 that RSF-allied ‘bandits’ were intercepting and plundering trucks in North Kordofan.
