The United States strongly condemned on Friday the bombing of Ida refugee camp in South Sudan’s Unity state by the Sudanese Air Force (SAF).

The camp was acting as a shelter for refugees from the Nuba Mountains and South Kordofan in Sudan — regions which have experienced heavy air strikes in the past months by SAF aircrafts.

White House spokesperson Jay Carney said in a statement on Thursday that the United States called for the Government of Sudan to stop attacks and air strikes immediately.

“The US also urges South Sudan to exercise restraint in response to this provocation to prevent the escalation of military actions,” the statement read.

On its part, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) condemned Thursday’s air strike and said it could be considered as an international crime, the commission’s spokesperson Rupert Colville said.
