Uniformed men kill, beat, rob Darfuri refugees in Kenya
A Darfuri trader was shot dead, and another wounded in the Kakuma refugee camp in northern Kenya on Tuesday. “Three gunmen in military uniforms entered the shelter of two West Darfuri traders at Block 8 of the Kakuma refugee camp on Tuesday morning at 8am. They fired three shots at Ismail Adam Arbab (29), who died instantly. Tajeldin Yagoub Arbab (28) was seriously wounded. He was transferred to the camp hospital,” Mohamed Idris Jibril, head of the Darfuri youth group in Kakuma camp, reported to Radio Dabanga. “The robbers stole 38,000 Kenyan shilling ($430) from the deceased. The incident was reported to the police, who came hours after the attack.” The youth group leader said that on Sunday three other Darfuris in the camp were attacked. “Four gunmen, also wearing military uniforms, raided the shelter of El Fadel Mohamed (22) and Mohamed Haroun (27) from Zalingei, and Yousif Bashir (32) from El Geneina, before dawn on Sunday. The thieves beat them with their machetes, and robbed them of KES7,000 ($80). The victims are currently also treated at the camp hospital.” Jibril said that in response a group of 325 Darfuri refugees handed a memorandum to the UN offices, located in Block 3 of the camp, on Wednesday morning. In the memorandum, they denounce the attacks on Darfuris in Kenya, and demand from the UN and the Kenyan government to investigate the problems facing the Sudanese refugees, and to provide security in the camp.
