UNAMID peacekeeper shot in North Darfur, wounded

An United Nations peacekeeper was shot by unknown armed men while on guard duty. The UN-African Union Mission explained in a statement that at approximately 2:25, unidentified gunmen shot the peacekeeper as he was guarding a water point 3 kilometers north east of Kutum in North Darfur.

“UNAMID forces nearby retaliated with fire which forced the perpetrators to flee. The peacekeeper was rushed to a nearby UNAMID medical centre for treatment and later evacuated to the Mission’s hospital in El Fasher and is in a stable condition,” said the statement. 

The Mission appealed to the Sudanese authorities “to speedily investigate this wanton incident to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
