Unamid offers to support Deleig camps in Central Darfur

Representatives of Unamid visited the Deleig camp for the displaced in Central Darfur, on Tuesday, for the first time in two years.

A Deleig camp sheikh told Radio Dabanga that a group of Unamid officers arrived from Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur, accompanied by a large force of police and security agents.

“The Unamid staff told us they had come to discuss the security situation and the humanitarian needs of the people in the camp, and the other, smaller camps for the displaced near Deleig town. We told them that the protection of the displaced from the never-ending attacks by militiamen is our top priority.”

“Furthermore”, the sheikh said, “we provided them with a list of requirements, such as doctors, health workers, and medicines for the hospital of Deleig, teachers, new classrooms, furniture, and textbooks for the only basic school in the camp, and an increase of the food rations for the displaced.”

The sheikh noted that the Unamid visit was the first one since the beginning of 2012. “The peacekeepers explained to us that the delay was caused by procedures and restrictions imposed by the Sudanese authorities.”
