Unamid holds consultations in Doha on Darfur, Sudan’s Dialogue

The head of Unamid and Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, held consultations in Doha with the Deputy Prime Minister of Qatar, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, the Qatari Minister of State for the Council of Ministers, and Thabo Mbeki, chairman of the AU High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) on Tuesday.  They agreed that the national dialogue initiative of President Omar Al Bashir provides a historic opportunity for bringing peace to Sudan. They also agreed on the urgency of ending the war in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile State, as part of the ongoing effort to create a conducive environment for the national dialogue, Unamid stated in a press release issued today (Wednesday). In this regard, it was further agreed to support the negotiations on security arrangements in Darfur under the auspices of the AUHIP.  The Deputy Prime Minister and Unamid’s Joint Chief Mediator agreed to provide all necessary support to ensure successful negotiations on the security arrangements, and the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Darfur, taking into consideration the ongoing implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).  Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister in particular emphasised the need for the implementation of development projects, which could alleviate the suffering of the people in the Darfur camps for the displaced, and enhance security and stability in the region.
