UNAMID delivers aid to displaced in N. Darfur
During the past two days large quantities of humanitarian aid have been delivered to thousands of civilians who were recently displaced in the villages of Saraf Omra, Kabkabiya, Al-Sref and Abu Gamra. A press release issued by UNAMID on Sunday, 20 January, said that non-food items such as sleeping mats, plastic tarps, blankets and water purification equipment were delivered to the area by land and air during the past several days. The current humanitarian situation in the region emerged earlier this month as a result of clashes between the Abbala and Beni Hussein tribes over gold mines in the Jebel ‘Amer area, resulting in a mass displacement of some 70,000 people and more than 100 killed according to Government figures. “No aid distributed in Saraf Omra and Kabkabiya” At the same time, local sources told Radio Dabanga on Sunday that no aid has been distributed to the displaced in the cities of Saraf Omra and Kabkabiya due to the authorities’ refusal to acknowledge the presence of any displaced in these cities by the authorities. The deputy Nazer (head) of the native administration of the Beni Hussein tribe, Adam Abdul Rahim Abdullah, confirmed to Radio Dabanga the delivery of non-food aid to the area and noted that the aid will be distributed to the displaced after all the aid has arrived to the area. He added that all the main roads in the localities of Al Sref Beni Hussein, Saraf Omra and Kabkabiya have been opened. Furthermore, government authorities reportedly refuse to acknowledge the presence of displaced in both Saraf Omra and Kabkabiya as well as refusing to allow a number of human rights organizations to visit Saraf Omra for inspecting the current situation. A displaced person in Saraf Omra told Radio Dabanga that they presented a memorandum to the locality’s commissioner demanding the government authorities to acknowledge their presence and provide them with assistance or to allow international human rights organizations to do their job and provide aid to them.
