‘Um Jaras limited to specific parties in Darfur’: Communist Party
The Um Jaras Forum, concluded on Sunday in eastern Chad, has not considered the opinion of the main Darfur stakeholders, according to the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP). Saleh Mahmoud, the member of the SCP’s Central Committee in charge of the Darfur file, stated in a press release issued on Tuesday that the Party welcomes any initiative that will stop the war in Darfur or in any other war-torn part of the country. “Yet, it should respect and include the views of the affected population.” “The SCP does have some reservations about the Forum; most notably that it lacks the spirit of nationalism. The participation was limited to specific parties, while other leaders and notables of the region were excluded. The absence of the main stakeholders, the displaced people, along with the armed movements has made the Forum’s outputs and recommendations less convincing.” File photo: Militia leader Musa Hilal (L) and Dr Hassan El Turabi, chairman of the Popular Congress Party, at the Second Um Jaras Forum (Suna) Related: Displaced condemn Um Jaras Forum as ‘Darfur burns’ (2 April 2014) ‘Displacement policy in Darfur leads to demands for self-rule’: rebel leader (1 April 2014) Um Jaras recommendations: ‘Disarm all but regular forces in Darfur’ (31 March 2014) ‘Problem in Darfur is mobilisation and arming of tribes’: Um Jaras Forum (30 March 2014) Al Bashir, Deby in Um Jaras a ‘show’: Darfur rebels (28 March 2014) More than 1,000 Darfuri displaced attend Kalma conference (1 January 2014)
