Two women raped, men beaten near Dreige camp, South Darfur
Pro-government militiamen have raped two displaced women from Dreige camp near Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, badly beating several men who came to the women’s aid. According to witnesses, a number of displaced people were outside the camp on Tuesday morning, making their way to Tugulah, near Fasha village to collect firewood. The group was accosted by the militiamen while they were on the road. They were first robbed, and then the attackers beat the rest of the group and raped the two women. One of the displaced men, Adam Bakhit, told Radio Dabanga that he was hit on the head with a machete when he and other displaced men attempted to rescue the women. Speaking from Nyala hospital where he was taken for treatment, Bakhit said that regular attacks and robberies make the situation outside the camp very unsafe. He appealed to Unamid to do more to protect the displaced civilians of Darfur. File photo: Women collecting firewood near Nyala
