Two minor rebel factions reconcile in West Darfur
Two breakaway factions of the larger movements boycotting the Doha process have reconciled in West Darfur. Representatives of the Sudan Liberation Army-FREES (SLA-FREES) and the Justice and Reform Movement (JRM), splinter groups of SLA-Abdul Wahid and the Justice and Equality Movement respectively, signed a peace agreement on Tuesday, 27 July. The United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur observed the signing ceremony and reported the incident in a statement yesterday. The agreement was mediated by a reconciliation committee composed of native administrators and local leaders. UNAMID said that the deputy governor of West Darfur, Abolgasim Baraka, “thanked the mediation team for their initiative and urged all non-signatory movements to join the peace process.”
