Tribal clashes in Central Darfur continue, 73 killed -source
Hostilities between two tribes in Central Darfur erupted on Thursday following an apparent successful mediation that seemed to prevent 4,000 gunmen from battling each other just hours before.The hostilities between the Misseriya and Salamat tribes in Umm Dukhun, Central Darfur, have continued for the fifth consecutive day in complete absence of the authorities, witnesses informed Radio Dabanga. Dozens of people were reportedly killed and many others were injured, in addition to a number of missing persons. Clashes erupted between the rivaling tribes on Saturday and Sunday. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a source from the area said that the number of people killed since Friday amounts to 73, in addition to dozens of injured. A Salamat tribesman claims that he saw at least 19 of his people getting killed and 12 injured in the recent clashes. He explained that 15 people were killed and six injured in the battle in Jowidina and another four killed and six injured in the area of Magan. Witnesses revealed that thousands of people fled to neighboring country Chad and that dozens of fighters from both tribes were arriving from different directions.Radio Dabanga received reports on ‘widespread looting’ of people’s properties and livestock, targeting the Salamat in particular. Also, witnesses reported that citizens from Umm Dukhun are facing a severe food shortages and added that prices of consumer goods have increased due to the fact that the roads are blocked and normal life is on hold in the locality.It was reported that several members of native administrators of Central Darfur belonging to both sides arrived in Umm Dukhun on Sunday and that a meeting between the officials and the rivaling tribes continued for hours yesterday.Moreover, the witnesses claimed that about 4,000 gunmen of both tribes gathered in the locality on Wednesday while a number of 100 gunmen, with no links to the conflict, attacked the town’s market after one of the Salamat tribesmen was reportedly robbed by a Misseriya tribesman.Related: Tribal clashes resume in Central Darfur, at least 10 killed (5 April 2013)
