Sudanese refugees in Camp Treguine in eastern Chad are suffering from deteriorating health conditions, caused by the increased spread of malaria and a shortage of potable water, Radio Dabanga learned on Wednesday October 24. Ali Yagoub, head of the camp, told Radio Dabanga that malaria is spreading among refugees due to the lack of mosquito nets and blankets. He explained that the camp also suffers from a shortage of malaria medicine. The camp leader appealed to UNHCR to accelerate the provision of medicines and distribution of mosquito nets to the refugees. On the other hand, he added that Camp Treguine is suffering from a shortage of potable water due to the destruction of the camp’s only well, caused by the heavy rain. Yagoub explained that UNHCR tried to solve the issue by providing water in water tanks, however the issue has not been resolved.Due to the lack of potable water, the refugees are forced to drink the well’s salty water which is not suitable for drinking. He asked the UNHCR to speed up the drilling of a new well to avoid the potential consequences.
