Tightened security measures in East Darfur ‘to curb lawlessness’
The Government of East Darfur state has tightened its security measures while extra security forces have arrived “to ensure the security of citizens during the Eid el Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).” The Commissioner of the Coordination Office of East Darfur state, Balal Saeed Digeis, reported to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) that these measures are in place “to curb lawlessness and narrow down the opportunity for those seeking to undermine the stability of the state during the Feast of the Sacrifice and the following days.” Digeis added that the authorities in East Darfur state are currently putting the final touches for the organisation of a reconciliation conference between the warring Rizeigat and Ma’alia tribes.Tensions between the Rezeigat and Ma’alia were reportedly triggered in early August by unresolved disputes concerning access to land resources. Hundreds of people of both sides were killed and injured as a result of the escalating violence. The two tribes signed a peace agreement in late August, although reports of instability in the region continued to surface.
