Three people were seriously injured when a goods in the ammunition dump of a military garrison exploded in Abu Jubeiha, South Kordofan, on Thursday evening. Authorities said that the blast was caused by a blown fuse.
The explosion caused fear among the people in Abu Jubeiha, a town east of the state, and a number of residents fled outside the town to find shelter. Many have returned by Friday.
A resident told Radio Dabanga that the incident occurred at 5pm, in the ammunition dump of the 53rd infantry in southeast Abu Jubeiha. “The explosions continued for two hours. Shrapnel was blown outward and we have found debris within two kilometres from the town.”
Seven people sustained injuries, including an administrative officer of the garrison named Mohamed Mukhtar. Three victims were transferred by helicopter to El Obeid in a serious condition to receive treatment.
Flaming shrapnel set fire in nearby areas, which heavy rainfall extinguished soon after, according to the witness.
Authorities pointed to a blown fuse, while others said that the high temperature in the storage room caused the explosion.
