A large fire broke out on Monday afternoon in a camp for displaced people in Kereinik locality, West Darfur. More than 180 homes were completely destroyed. Three people were burned, two of them seriously.
A Sheikh in Abuja camp, east of El Geneina, said that the cause of the fire has not yet been discovered. He explained that 71 rows of homes burned to the ground and estimated that they contained at least 180 homes of displaced families.
Among the three wounded is camp Sheikh Mohamed Yousif, who was badly injured and transferred to the hospital in El Geneina in a serious condition. A woman was seriously burned, and a primary school teacher, nicknamed 'Gardia', also sustained injuries.
The camp Sheikh reported that 500 bags of sorghum, 300 sacks of groundnuts, along with large quantities of food including sesame oil, were destroyed or damaged.
“The affected families are in the open with no food and cover. The local authorities and humanitarian organisations have to accelerate the provision of assistance to them.”
