Three Sudanese farmers killed in clash with Ethiopian gunmen
Ethiopian gunmen clash with farmers in El Gedaref state, bordering Ethiopia, resulting in the death of three farmers, a witness reports.
A witness has reported that foreign militants killed three Sudanese farmers in El Gedaref state, and wounded five others, on Wednesday.
“Large numbers of Ethiopian militiamen occupied the farms in Khor Shatta area, in El Quresha locality,” the witness told Radio Dabanga, “leading to clashes with Sudanese farmers who were armed with light weapons.”
The source said that the fighting lasted from 2pm to 3am. Osman Ahmed, Ishag Abu Mohamed from Kinen El Beer area, and Mousa Eisa from Khor Shatta were killed. Five others sustained various injuries. Residents in the area expressed their sadness that no representatives of the government came to the funerals.
The source added that the armed men “may be backed by the Ethiopian government, with the purpose of intimidating the Sudanese farmers from cultivating land” in the mentioned areas. He concluded that residents in El Quresha criticised the Sudanese government's failure to complete the demarcation of the border with Ethiopia, to deter chaos.
One year ago, at least ten Sudanese farmers were killed in a raid by Ethiopian gunmen in the area of Basanda in El Gedaref. They opened fire on the farmers following a dispute over agricultural land.
