Thousands of North Darfur villagers flee to areas short of water

In the attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the area of Shagarla in Kutum locality, North Darfur, 15 members of one family were injured by shells. Thousands of villagers have fled in panic to areas where water is scarce. Thousands of villagers fled to the forests, hills and valleys in Kutum. Several of them told Radio Dabanga that about 3,000 people fled from Amarei to Goz Yomein, 2,500 from Kuju to the forests of Hama Gush, 3,000 from the villages of Gadara, Ed El Garad, and Nura Ba to the Tura Bora hills, and about 2,000 from Shagarla, Tima, and Debba Nayra to the Gasana forests and valleys. “These people lost everything apart from the clothes they were wearing when they fled. They may die of thirst, as the areas they fled to, are short of water sources.” The newly displaced urged the authorities and humanitarian organisations to accelerate the provision of water, food, covers, and medicines. No response One of the neighbours told Radio Dabanga that the house of the family in Shagarla, located west of Donki Baashim, was hit by Katyusha shells, injuring 15 family members present, including ten children. “They face the risk of bleeding to death,” the neighbour said. “We have contacted Unamid and the authorities, and requested them to rescue those wounded, but we did not receive a response up till today (Tuesday).” The 15 injured and thousands of others are currently surviving in the forests and valleys of Gasana, northeast of Kutum town. The neighbour reiterated his appeal to Unamid and the local authorities to accelerate assistance to the wounded, and the newly displaced, “who may die of dehydration”.
