Sudanese Justice Minister defends Um Jaras Forum

The Sudanese Minister of Justice and Chairperson of the Mechanism for the Implementation of Decisions of the Um Jaras Forum for Peace, Security and Development in Darfur, Mohamed Bushara Dosa, has defended the forum that took place in Um Jaras, Chad, last month, emphasising that it was not a negotiation forum. In his briefing to council members of the Sudanese Government of National Unity in Khartoum, Dosa stated that the Forum aimed at “ending all forms of war and bring about development and stability in Darfur”. Dosa describing the Forum as “a valuable addition” to the 2011 Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, and separate peace agreements with armed movements. He confirmed that the Forum had discussed three issues: “Ending the war as soon as possible, bringing peace, and convincing the armed movements to sit down at the negotiating table to reach a just and lasting peace in Darfur”. The chairperson requested all political forces to play a positive role in advocating for the outputs of the Forum. He noted that the Mechanism has organised more than twenty briefings for the Darfur communities in Khartoum State, besides holding similar meetings in the five states of Darfur.
