Sudanese jihadist dies in Syria bombing

Sudanese jihadist Mohamed Abubakar Abdallah Jarelnabi (29) was killed in an air raid on the Islamic State (IS) site of Daesh in the Syrian town of Homs on 26 December.

The dead man was the son of a well-known Khartoum businessman, Abubakar Abdallah Jarelnabi, a veteran adherent of the Sudanese Islamic movement. The family received the news of his death on Saturday.

This brings the number of Sudanese killed while fighting in Jihadist groups to 12 in Syria. At least 25 Sudanese have been killed in Libya since 2013, 12 in Mali, between 10 and 15 in Iraq, eight in Somalia, and five in Yemen.

Jarelnabi (29) reportedly joined the IS group last year after taking part in battles against Sudanese rebel groups in Blue Nile State and elsewhere in Sudan.

The man’s family distributed an obituary of the deceased to a limited number of local newspapers, which is quite unusual in Sudan.

The dead man’ s father left Sudan for Uganda some years ago after sharp disagreements with influential government figures, who dismissed him as chairman of the ruling party’s parliamentary caucus and as MP.
