Sudanese demand ‘fair trial of immediate release’ of NISS detainees
In South Darfur 114 lawyers demanded from the state’s Security Committee to immediately release lawyer Adam Sharif or give him a fair trial. Adam Sharif, a prominent lawyer and coordinator of the Darfur Bar Association, was arrested in Nyala on September 26 without being charged. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a lawyer in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, commented that the arrest of Sharif without a charge or investigations is “incompatible with the Constitution of the Sudan and violating civil and political rights.” Sharif’s family has not been allowed to visit him. The lawyer is suffering from a heart disease and high blood pressure. Sit-in Troops of the Sudanese National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) allegedly assaulted and beat female relatives of detainees, in order to break up their sit-ins in front of NISS premises in Khartoum and Khartoum North. One of the relatives, Sandra Faroug, and the wife of detainee Dr Amjad Farid, told Radio Dabanga that they started with the sit-ins in front of the NISS buildings on Saturday. Notwithstanding the beating by security troops, they intend to continue with the sit-ins until their relatives are released. Both of them confirmed the presence of at least 1,100 people in the prisons of the national capital. They added that the NISS officers refuse to take foods and clothing requested by the detainees. The mother of detainee Jafar Khidir described to Radio Dabanga the behaviour of the security forces “when they raided our house” in Khartoum and the “filthy way” they treated her.
