Sudan’s Dialogue parties call for release political detainees; peace talks to resume
The political parties participating in the National Dialogue, initiated by the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), have appealed to President Omar Al Bashir to release the political detainees in the country. The chairman of the AU High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), announced that peace talks on South Kordofan and the Blue Nile will resume on 12 October. Three days later peace negotiations on Darfur will commence. Hassan Osman Rizig, member of the National Dialogue mechanism, reported to Radio Dabanga from Khartoum that the opposition parties participating in the Dialogue agreed with the NCP and the parties loyal to the NCP, on the release of all political detainees. “Accordingly, the National Dialogue members submitted a list of 64 prisoners, convicted for political activities, and a second list with the names of 64 people currently detained on political grounds, to the competent authorities, requesting their release from prisons and detention centres all over Sudan.” On behalf of the National Dialogue mechanism, Rizig also called on all Sudanese citizens, political parties, and the armed movements, to forward details of political detainees “in every corner of the country” to the mechanism, or their party.Peace negotiations Meanwhile, Thabo Mbeki, chairman of the AU High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), currently visiting Khartoum, announced the resumption of peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on 12 October. “Peace talks with the Darfuri armed movements will start three days later, on 15 October, in order to reach a cease-fire that will pave the way for a broad Sudanese dialogue”, Mbeki told the press after meeting with representatives of the National dialogue’s 7+7 Steering Committee on Thursday. “The preparation arrangements for the cessation of hostilities in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states, as well as Darfur have been completed”, he added.
