Sudan, FAO agree to combat illegal fishing

The Sudanese Ministry of Animal Resources signed a Memo of Understanding with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to fight illegal fishing on Wednesday.
Sudan will join the implementation of the Convention on Port State Measures to Reduce Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing in the Red Sea Fisheries, the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported on Wednesday.
Dr Jalaleldin Rabih, state minister at the Ministry of Ministry of Animal Resources, Pastures and Fisheries witnessed the signing ceremony. The director of the Department of Fish and Aquaculture Dr Hammad Shento signed on behalf of the ministry whereas Dr Baba Ghana Ahmado, FAO Resident Representative in Sudan, signed for his organisation.
Ahmado said that FAO pays great attention to the animal resources sector, especially fish, through the development of a clear strategy for marine fisheries and implementation of technical projects in the fields of the training and capacity building of the modern maritime surveillance programmes in order to prevent overfishing.
