Sudan Call launch campaign against Al Bashir re-election

The Sudan Call, a coalition of opposition parties and armed movements, has launched a campaign to counter proposed constitutional amendments that will allow the nomination of President Al Bashir for another term.

At a press conference at the headquarters of the opposition National Umma Party (NUP) on Saturday, Omar El Degeir, the head of Sudan Call members in Sudan, confirmed “It is the goal [of Sudan Call] to topple the regime and not to arrange any kind of soft landing.”

El Degeir said that on the contrary, the coalition “will work to make the landing rough in many forms and aspects.”

He said at the press conference that the campaign, which was announced by the coalition last month, “will begin with the formation of a group of political and tactical organs that will focus on the failure of Al Bashir and his regime to provide a decent life for the Sudanese people.”

He said that the slogan of the campaign would be “to amend the constitution means Al Bashir’s candidacy, the continuation of poverty and ignorance, more freedoms restricting laws, more corruption and producing fat cats”.

Enough campaign

He said that the Enough campaign would have a campaign of signatures against the amendment of the Constitution and the nomination of Al Bashir, this in addition to the implementation of a number of sit-ins in the headquarters of parties, transition to public fields and holding a number of symposia in Duweim, Sennar, El Gedaref, Madani, El Fasher, Nyala, El Geneina, Kassala and Port Sudan.

As reported previously by Radio Dabanga, El Degeir said that “this campaign will not only oppose the re-election of Al Bashir, but target the entire National Salvation Regime which is based on tyranny, corruption, and misery policies that have cause all this suffering of the Sudanese people.”

He described the government's policies as “a major failure that has plunged the country into a whirlpool of crises, including the current disaster”.

On August 9, the ruling National Congress Party appointed President Omar Al Bashir as its presidential candidate in the 2020 election, in spite of the country’s constitution restriction to two terms. The nomination therefore requires constitutional amendments.

El Mahdi to return to Sudan

Sudan Call head and President of the NUP, El Sadig El Mahdi, has announced his return to Sudan, after an absence of about nine months so as to continue the political arrangement for the convention of the eighth general conference of the party.

On Sunday El Mahdi met in London with a high delegation from the Sudanese Congress Party, led by the political secretary Abubakr Yousef Babikir. He said that the two parties agreed in a joint press statement to confirm the position of Sudan Call for developments in the political negotiation process and the held the government the responsibility for the path of a peaceful solution to a dead end by evading its commitment to the road map.

The two parties stressed the importance of popular work and support the regular movement, praising the Sudan Call forces for launching Enough Campaign to fight the constitutional amendment so as to prevent the nomination of President Omar Al Bashir in 2020 and resist economic measures.
