Sudan activists campaign for release of political detainees
The Sudanese Committee of Solidarity with the Victims of the September Demonstrations, in cooperation with the youth department of the National Consensus Forces (NCF, a coalition of opposition parties) have decided to step-up their campaign for the release of political detainees in the country. The Solidarity Committee and the NCF Youth Department will submit a memorandum to the Human Rights Commission in Khartoum about the detention by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) of more than 82 Darfuri and Kordofani political party members and activists.They also plan to organise sit-ins, according to representatives of the Solidarity Committee and NCF Youth at a press conference in Khartoum on Monday. Hala Tajelsir, member of the NCF Youth, told Radio Dabanga after the press conference that the NCF obtained information that 60 political activists are held in custody, in addition to about 22 recently detained Darfuris. Among them are residents of El Salam camp for the displaced, who were detained during a military raid at the camp on 7 August, and deported to Khartoum. Tajelsir confirmed that Abdallah Jabara and lawyer El Haj Azrag are among the jailed Darfuri, besides a number of detainees from the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan, and members of the Sudanese Congress Party in West and North Kordofan. She appealed through Radio Dabanga to “all benevolent and human rights defenders to support the detainees, until they are released or brought to a fair trial”. The Darfur representative of the Solidarity Committee, Mohamed Idris Jido, said that the Darfuri detainees are in a dire situation, “particularly those who have been deported from Mellit in North Darfur, and El Salam camp in South Darfur”. Siddig Yousif, member of the Sudanese Communist Party’s Central Committee, and chairman of the NCF reported to Radio Dabanga that the Committee obtained but a few names of the detained, compared to the numbers of political inmates inside the prisons. He called on the political forces, activists, and civil society organizations to hand the Committee any information they have about violations of human rights in the country. He confirmed the recent detention of many citizens who went to the streets in protests against the worsening of the living conditions in Sudan, a lack of services, and the absence of water drainage devices, after torrential rains hit the country during the last two weeks.
