A group of 50 Darfuri women students have been evicted from an Omdurman boarding facility on Tuesday for non-payment of rent. Police executing a Court Order turned them and their belongings out onto the street.
The road outside El Marwa boarding house in El Fitehab district Square 13 was filled with bags and belongings of the 50 students, who now have nowhere to live.
A representative of the students told Radio Dabanga that Darfuri students have been living in the boarding house since ever since the 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfur_Peace_Agreement (also known as the Abuja Agreement) and the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) used to pay the rent.
“After the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur in 2011, DRA Minister Tajeldin Bashir Nyam used to pay the rent of SDG 4,500 ($675) a month out of his own pocket, but he has recently apologised for his financial circumstances, and can no longer do so.”
The students appealed to the authorities and leaders of Darfur to provide accommodation for them because of their circumstances.
