Students tortured in security detention
Five of the 11 detained students from Nyala University and higher secondary school were subjected to ill-treatment and torture by officers of the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) in Nyala, South Darfur, multiple sources affirmed to Radio Dabanga. They were accused of planning and participating in demonstrations, which took place in Nyala last August.The detained students were forced to stand under the burning sun for more than six hours a day, after being stripped of all clothes except their pants, they were subjected to waterboarding. Waterboarding is a form of torture in which water is poured over the face of the (blindfolded) detainee, causing the individual to experience the sensation of drowning. Sources described the continuous exposure of the detainees to whipping by black plastic batons, causing back bruises. In addition, they were deprived of sleep for long hours, which caused severe colds . They disclosed that detainee Ibrahim Adam Osman was transferred to Nyala Hospital after he suffered a break down, due to the torture he was exposed to. A medical source confirmed to Radio Dabanga that Ibrahim suffered various injuries. In addition, he was struck by malaria and typhoid as a result of extreme exhaustion.Eye-witnesses confirmed that Ibrahim was taken back to security detention shortly after he was discharged from Nyala Hospital.
