Student protests in S Darfur leave 7 injured
Citizens of Rehaid Albirdi, South Darfur, carried out a demonstration on Monday against high living costs and rising prices. During the demonstration seven people got injured and a number of institutions and service facilities were burned. A witness told Radio Dabanga that high school students gathered outside the town’s Electricity Offices yesterday night at 11pm shouting “People want to bring down the regime!”. Demonstrators then set fire to the town’s generator and moved towards the Zakat offices (charity offices). More than a thousand citizens, who are also discontented with the situation, joined the students and burned the Zakat offices and grain stores. They also burned the locality buildings, the locality commissioner’s office and all other government offices, except for the Service Affairs’. The police fired shots and tear gas and used batons to disperse the protesters. As a result, seven people got injured, three protesters and four police officers.
