‘Stop all ongoing trials in Darfur’

Darfuri lawyers association says President Bashir should order a general amnesty of all prisoners detained in the Darfur crisis

The Darfuri lawyers association appealed on Monday for halting ongoing trials of all accused and detained in the Darfur crisis.Mohammed Aidallah Duma, chairperson of the Darfuri lawyers association, said in an interview with Radio Dabanga that what’s required now is a general amnesty by President Omar al-Bashir for all prisoners and convicts under trial.

“This will create the right grounds for peace in Darfur,” Duma said. He added that the living conditions in Darfur now were the worst ever because of the failure of the agricultural season.

Duma also predicted a famine in Darfur and appealed to humanitarian organizations to work to prevent starvation in Darfur.

He also made a simultaneous appeal to the Sudanese government to act quickly by placing appropriate measures and precautions to provide food in the region.
