South Sudan could withdraw Heglig under U.N. mediated plan
South Sudan said on Friday it could withdraw its troops from Heglig if the United Nations deployed ‘neutral forces’ in the area. Speaking in Nairobi, Pagan Amum, South Sudan’s lead negotiator at talks with Sudan, said his country was ready to withdraw under a U.N. mediated plan: ‘South Sudanese army will not leave the Heglig area until United Nation’s troops are deployed, in order to prevent attacks into our territory from Sudan,’ said Amum. Amum is also the Secretary General of the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM).His statement comes a day after South Sudan President Salva Kiir refused to order his troops to pull out from Heglig.
