South Darfur militiamen abduct four, demand SDG2 million ransom

Militiamen have allegedly hijacked a vehicle belonging to the hospital of Kass in South Darfur, and abducted its driver and three passengers. One of the relatives of the abductees told Radio Dabanga that on Monday evening “government-backed militiamen” in a Land Cruiser mounted with a machine gun intercepted a Buffalo vehicle belonging to Kass hospital, on its way back from Nyala, at about 7km east of the town. The militiamen took the car with the four people to an unknown destination. The Commissioner of Kass locality organised a rescue team to track-down the kidnappers. A witness informed Radio Dabanga that the militiamen have contacted the Commissioner demanding he pay SDG2 million ($455,000) for the release of the four abductees, who include a medical doctor, a driver and two guards; one of them policeman and the other a member of the Central Reserve Forces (Abu Tira).
