South Darfur convoy plundered for ‘thousands’: one dead, one wounded
One man is dead and another injured after a paramilitary group attacked and plundered a commercial convoy in Mershing locality, South Darfur on Tuesday.
One man is dead and another injured after a paramilitary group attacked and plundered a commercial convoy in Mershing locality, South Darfur on Tuesday.
A witness told Radio Dabanga that on Tuesday afternoon, a commercial convoy of 11 vehicles was returning to Mershing after shopping at Kidijeer. The convoy was intercepted by gunmen driving two vehicles, with others mounted on camels, who opened fire on the vehicles.
Abdullah Mohammed El Nur was killed instantly, while Abdullah Abdelrahman suffered gunshot wounds.
The witness said the militants then forced all the passengers to disembark at gunpoint, ordered them to lie down and then stole their money, mobile phones, other property and goods, “worth thousands of Pounds”.
The witness that on Wednesday morning, a local rescue team of police and Popular Defence Force members tracked-down the offenders and arrested one of them; a member of the Border Guards, in one of the settlements.
The witness said that authorities ordered the Border Guards commander, Abdullah Azrag Abohalio, to hand over the rest of the culprits and return the pillaged items. It is not yet clear whether the commander complied.
