The forces of national consensus, a coalition of political parties in South Darfur strongly condemned the crackdown by security services and repression of peaceful protestors in Nyala on 24,25 and 26 January. In a statement, the coalition said the authorities must compensate citizens for the loss of lives, injuries sustained and property destroyed. The political parties all signed the statement, which compelled the National Congress Party (NCP) to take full responsibility for the events in Nyala, including the deaths and injuries. The statement stressed the ‘authority of the NCP is still fomenting sectarian strife and fuelling tribal conflicts.’ The NCP is ‘pursuing its policy of divide and rule by increasing the three Darfur states to five.’The coalition stated this is in opposition to the desire of most Darfuri citizens, who wish for Darfur to return to its former status as one state. They said the Darfuri citizens are weary of US backing as they think the majority of money will be spent on salaries and miscellaneous expenses of the army, governors, ministers and board members rather than the development of services in Darfur.
