SLA and UNP sign Memorandum of Understanding in Kampala

The leader of the Sudanese Liberation Army, Minni Arkou Minnawi, and the UMA National Party (UNP) leader, Sadiq al-Mahdi, signed on Sunday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Kampala, Uganda. On the MoU it was agreed that Sudan will become a democratic, federal republic. All religions, ethnicities and cultures will be recognized and public and personal freedom will be respected. Sudan will promote and protect human rights and the rule of law, and the judiciary will become independent. In addition, the transfer of power will be peaceful and the Sudanese Armed Forces will be restructured.The signatory parties also agreed that refugees and displaced persons will have the right to return to their home areas and they will receive a compensation for the damages the wars caused them. Perpetrators who committed crimes in Darfur will be brought to justice. Sudan will consist of four ruling levels: federal, regional, provincial, locality. The agreement was signed by a member of Minni Mannawi’s delegation, Al Reiyah Mahmud and by UNP’s Mariam Al Saadiq Al Mahdi.
