Shops destroyed in Zamzam camp market fire, North Darfur

On Sunday a fire that broke out at the market of the Zamzam camp for the displaced near El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, burned eight shops and 20 shelters. One of the butchers told Radio Dabanga that a fire broke out at the market of Zamzam camp at about 10pm. Four shops and 20 sun shelters for butchers selling meat burned to ashes, four other shops were partially destroyed. The Zamzam market consists of more than thousand shops and 50 sun shelters, the butcher explained. The fire started at the butchers’ shelters, constructed of wood, straw, large sacks, and tarpaulins. “Therefore the fire very quickly spread to the neighbouring shops. Shop keepers, supported by customers just as quickly broke down 40 shops to secure the commodities.” The witness pointed out that the customers, the police and local authorities were involved in extinguishing the fire. The cause of the fire was not clear. File photo
