SDG70,000 heist in South Darfur
On Sunday, gunmen stole SDG70,000 in cash from the Mamoun El Bireir distribution centre in Nyala, South Darfur’s capital. “Four militiamen in a Land Cruiser raided the distribution centre of the Mamoun El Bireir factories at about 11am on Sunday”, a staff member of the distribution centre told Radio Dabanga. “After beating and tying us, they stole about SDG70,000 ($12,200) in cash, and fled.” The head of the Chamber of Commerce in South Darfur, Mousa Abdel Azim called the raid a “dangerous development”. He demanded from the South Darfur State government to restore the rule of law, and put an end to the robberies by militiamen. “They continuously attack factories and offices in the northern part of Nyala, in broad daylight.” On 5 June, Radio Dabanga quoted a South Darfur State minister who described the security situation in Nyala as “very bad”, and “beyond control of the central and state governments”.
