The Sudanese Air Force (SAF) launched several air raids in Warenne area in Talodi, South Kordofan on Thursday.A witness told Radio Dabanga that Antonov aircrafts shelled the area for a few hours before sunset on Thursday evening. This was coordinated by attacks from the government militia on the ground.
The planes dropped 17 bombs in all — including 10 in the north of Warenne, six in the west and four in east of the village.
The witness, who does not wish to be named fearing action against him by authorities on the ground, said, “I cannot estimate the losses in lives, property and livestock because all the citizens escaped the village and are taking refuge in the mountains and valleys after the bombing.”
He added that the director of security in the area, a captain had ordered the villagers to take arms previously to fight against the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in the region. The villagers however had rejected his order which led to the siege of the village.
In response to the rejection, the government forces prevented civilians in the village from allowing them to change their currency before the September 1 deadline. The villager, however, claimed that there were no SPLA forces in the area.
The continued air raids in South Kordofan come as a sharp contrast to President Omar Al-Bashir’s declaration of ceasefire in the region for two weeks.
