Road engineers abused, robbed in North Darfur
Gunmen have beaten and whipped a group of engineers east of El Fasher, the capital of the same called locality in North Darfur, and afterwards seized their vehicle and mobile phones this week. A citizen of El Fasher told Radio Dabanga that the group of engineers was working on the western Ingaz road (‘salvation road’) that leads to Um Keddada. They were attacked 17km east of El Fasher by gunmen, who whipped them and seized their vehicle and looted them of their mobile phones. According to the listener, the perpetrators then demanded the company working on the project to pay the amount of SDG50,000 (nearly $9,000) to return the stolen vehicle. The ‘Western Salvation Road’ is supposed to stretch from Khartoum to El Geneina once completed. The government has presented the project as a way of developing Sudan’s westernmost region.
