‘Rescue team’, camel thieves clash in El Sareif, North Darfur

A man was killed and five others injured in a clash between a rescue team and thieves in El Sareif Beni Hussein locality, North Darfur, on Monday. On the same day, a farmer was wounded in an attack by militant Abbala tribesmen east of El Sareif town. The rescue team was formed after gunmen had shot dead seven herders on Sunday evening, and stole 300 camels in the area of Tigi, located between the localities of El Sareif Beni Hussein and Kabkabiya in North Darfur. The rescue team tracked the thieves until they arrived in Goz El Naeem, in the northern part of El Sareif locality, a herder told Radio Dabanga.   “The rescue team found the thieves in Goz El Naeem. In the ensuing gunfire, a member of the rescue team was killed, and five others were injured. The thieves fled, leaving the stolen camels behind. A committee will return the stolen camels to the owners.” On Monday evening, a group of militant Abbala in two vehicles and on 40 motorcycles attacked farmers of the Beni Hussein tribe in the area east of El Sareif”, an eyewitness reported to Radio Dabanga. “One of the farmers was injured. He had to be transferred to a hospital in El Sareif for treatment.” He appealed to the Abbala in the locality to “listen to the voice of reason, instead of rumours that elements of the Beni Hussein tribe had stolen the camels”. He accused “third parties” of profiting from the continuation of the tribal conflicts in the locality, and called on the elders of the two tribes to “sit together, and solve their problems”.
