Rebels kill militia ‘pillaging’ between El Fasher and Nyala, Darfur
The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minawi (SLM-MM) announced the killing of a militia commander and 11 of his men on Thursday evening in the area of Khor Abeche, Sheiria locality in East Darfur. Adam Saleh, military spokesman for the SLM-MM reported to Radio Dabanga they attacked the headquarters of a “government-backed” militia in the area of Khor Abeche. Saleh confirmed the killing of the militia’s commander called Abu El Bashr, and 11 of his men, as well as the capture of a vehicle and the destruction of another one. The SLM-MM claims to have seized large amounts of weapons and ammunition. “This militia continues to kill, rape, loot and kidnap on the road between El Fasher and Nyala, and in the areas of Khor Abeche, Niteaga, Duma (in Marshang locality), Shangil Tobay and Sheiria.” The spokesman stressed that El Bashr could do so under the glare of the government, which “provided the militia with fuel, weapons and ammunition.” Saleh revealed that the commander’s headquarters, which is located near Khor Abeche between El Fasher and Nyala, are close to the headquarters of a Sudanese army compound. “We found seven Athos mini buses and three rickshaws, and a load full of sorghum and large quantities of cement, sugar and food.” The SLM-MM has reported the incident to Unamid, which has a base near Khor Abeche and asked to return all of the stolen property by the militia so their owners could pick it up.
