‘Rebel forces take control over El Taweisha garrison’: spokesman

The Darfur rebel forces announced that they have taken control over the military garrison of El Taweisha in North Darfur on Tuesday. “The Darfur joint resistance forces attacked the military garrison of El Taweisha in North Darfur on Tuesday afternoon,” according to Adam Saleh Abakar, spokesman for the Sudan Liberation Movement under the command of Minni Minawi (SLM-MM) as well as for the Darfur joint resistance forces. The spokesman reported that the rebel forces seized large quantities of weapons, supplies, and military hardware. “Our troops are now in full control of El Taweisha military garrison.” “We are still counting the dead and the wounded among the army and militia troops,” Abakar added. “Many other mercenaries of the National Congress Party fled from the garrison to the forests and valleys.” The SLM-MM and the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid El Nur (SLM-AW) are members of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), an alliance of Sudanese (armed) opposition movements formed in November 2011. Other, smaller Darfur rebel groups did not join the SRF, like for instance the Liberation Movement for Justice, led by Taher Hajar (LMJ-TH) and commanded in the field by Ali Karbino. The SLM-MM, SLM-AW, and LMJ-TH are cooperating in Darfur under the name of the “Darfur joint resistance forces”.
