Rape attempt, beating, ‘protection fees’ imposed in Central Darfur

In Nierteti locality, Central Darfur, two militiamen attempted to rape a displaced woman on Sunday. The day before, gunmen injured a school student, because he refused to hand them his mobile. Farmers in the locality complain about extortion by militiamen. He refused, whereupon they beat him in a most appalling way,” one of his relatives told Radio Dabanga. “We took him to the hospital of Nierteti in critical condition, and filed a complaint at the police station.” “Protection fees” In the areas of Ki Beih, in the northern part of Nierteti locality, and Kubri El Nahal, south of Nierteti town, militiamen have imposed “protection fees” on farmers. “They told us to pay SDG 80 ($14) for every two acres, besides six malwa (3.145 kg) of sorghum this week,” a farmer reported to Radio Dabanga from Kubri El Nahal. He appealed to the authorities to put an end to the extortion of the farmers in the locality.
