Protests in East Darfur’s Adila against new commissioner
On Wednesday, people in Adila town, East Darfur, protested against the appointment of a new commissioner. They submitted a memorandum to representatives of the national security service, the police, and the army in Adila, demanding the return of the former commissioner, police Brig. Ahmed Ali Rizig. The government institutions in Adila, Abu Karinka, Sharef, and El Mazrob are still closed since Sunday, after angry protesters changed the offices’ locks. On Sunday and Monday, Ma’aliya went to the streets in protest against against the formation of a new East Darfur State government. They do not feel safe in East Darfur, and demanded the areas inhabited by Ma’aliya to be incorporated in North Darfur State. On 20 August, hundreds of people were killed in renewed clashes between Ma’aliya and Rizeigat, after militant Rizeigat tribesmen reportedly attacked Ma’aliya in Abu Karinka locality. Ali Abdel Rahman El Taher, head of the sheikhs of the displaced in East Darfur, appealed via Radio Dabanga to both tribes “not to listen to instigators, and resort to the voice of reason”. He also called on all native administrators in the state to “put all their efforts in brokering peace between the warring tribes”.
